The Porsche car company is one of the most recognized names in the automotive industry. It is synonymous with luxury, performance, and most of all, the best in German engineering. In fact, in a survey conducted in May 2006, Porsche was declared “the most prestigious automobile brand” by the Luxury Institute.
Throughout the years, it has produced many iconic cars, like the Boxter, and the Cayman. Among these however, the Porsche 911 is arguably the most recognized by car fans. And with many a Porsche 911 for sale, used and brand new, it is also arguably the most popular.
The Porsche 911, also called the “Nine-Eleven”, is a 2-door luxury sports coupe first introduced in 1963. Its basic shape has changed little throughout the decades, and has established the car as one of the most iconic designs in the automotive world. In fact, when most people hear the name Porsche, it is the design of the 911 that usually first comes to mind.
Over the years, while the basic aesthetic design has barely changed, the engineering and technology underneath has. When the 911 was first introduced in 1963, it had an air-cooled engine that produced 128 hp. Its variants have since evolved to have water-cooled engines that can now produce up to 350 hp or higher, and can push the car from 0-62 mph in just 4.2 seconds.
But it is not just the engine that evolved over the years. True to its reputation for having very good engineering, the Porsche 911 also evolved to have modern suspension systems, braking systems, transmission systems, and utilized many modern lightweight materials. All the models of the 911 were considered cutting-edge during their day, and even today used Porsche 911 cars from years past could still hold their own with some of the most modern average cars.
There have been many different “upgraded” variants of the 911, among which are the the 911 GT3, and the 911 Turbo. The GT3 is the high-performance variant of the very first water-cooled 911. Its racing versions have won many major 24-hour races, and have dominated their competition at Le Mans. People can find a number of used Porsche 911 GT3 cars for sale, which can be more affordable than buying a brand new one.
The 911 Turbo was first introduced in 1974, but was known as the Porsche 930 in the U.S. and Canada. While the first 911 Turbo had both exciting speed and acceleration, and challenging handling with horrendous turbo lag, it has since evolved to many Turbo variants that improved upon the original shortcomings. Today, the most modern is the 997 Turbo, and it carries with it some of Porsche’s most advanced technology.
Like the GT3, fans can find a Porsche 911 Turbo for sale online and in used sports-car dealerships. Whatever generation is bought, however, drivers can be sure that the Turbo, as well as the other 911 variants, will live up to the car’s reputation.
