The Jaguar E Type was created in 1961 and first introduced in the UK. Many people are drawn to this model because of it’s sleek design and superb performance. It was labeled as an icon of the 1960s. The E Type was a great success and received approval from the public. This paticular model was sold to over 70,000 buyers until it was discontinued. The Jaguar E is a true classic automobile.
The public was first introduced to the Jaguar E Type as a two-seater coupe. The convertible was considered unique back then, especially for the Jaguar brand. The model has three sub-versions called, ‘Series 1′, ‘Series 2′ and ‘Series 3′. There was another additional series that was released right after the first one called, ‘Series 1 1/2″. In the lifespan of the model, there were other editions created that were upgraded. One of these editions included the Light-Weight. When the limited edition was first created, it was meant to only have 18 units available, however only 12 were built.
Versions of the E-Type
Jaguar cars have always been known for their sleekness and style. To follow up with this concept was the E1A, which was first created in 1957. Since the company found success in the 1950′s with their other models, they wanted to build a car that would replace the Jaguar XK150. The E1A came with a monocoque design along with a rear suspension (independent). Even though the car was built as a followup to the XK150, it was initially used for factory testings and was never shown or available to the public.
The E2A edition was first constructed in 1960. The overall body was made from aluminum. It was meant to be a race car and was used for this purpose in America. The car was later used as a testing automobile in England.
Series 1 was first introduced to the world in 1961 and had its run for about seven years. The manufacturers wanted this vehicle to be only for export. Under the hood, the powerful vehicle held a 3.8 litre, 6-cylinder engine. The first cars that were created were constructed with flat floors. Other features included latches and an external hood. This series is still considered valuable because they are very limited and they are rare. The builders of this version made sure to add more leg room. The engine’s power was also increased.
All of the E-Types come with rear suspensions and disc brakes. Other features include an in-board and torsion bar front ends. It has been reported that Jaguar was the first manufacturer to use four-wheel disc brakes in their vehicles.
Finding an E-type model with a hard top is very rare and is almost unheard of. There are some companies who can re-construct a hard top if requested. In 1966, the E-type model came with a 2+2 version of the coupe. This version came with an automatic transmission. An observer might also notice the roof also has different angles. With all of these changes, the model still remained a two-seater. A classic Jaguar for sale usually doesn’t come with the original paint.
The Series 2 was first introduced in 1969, and continued through 1971. It came with open headlights and larger tail-lights. Some of the trademarks for this series are the uprated brakes and electric fans. Any Jaguar mechanic can easily identify an engine associated with the Series 2.
The Series 3 was introduced to the public in 1971, right after the discontinued second version. This version came with a V12 engine. All of the features were upgraded including the standard power steering. In 2008, the last E-type Jaguar parts were assembled from a surplus dating back to in 1974.
