Alfa Romeo (or A.L.F.A.) is an Italian manufacturer of high quality cars that have achieved iconic status. The company was founded over one hundred years ago by an Italian aristocrat, Cavaliere Ugo Stella. Shortly after the end of World War I, Alfa Romeo began producing both road cars and race cars. There were many early, high profile races won by Alfa Romeo cars, with drivers like Giuseppe Campari and Enzo Ferrari, who would go on to build his own cars.
The Alfa Romeo factory suffered bombing during World War II and struggled financially for many years. Smaller road cars began production in 1954. The road cars are solid and dependable, in addition to stylish. The 1990s saw the Alfa Romeo 145, a three-door hatchback, noted for its ease in handling, and the four-door 146. These have been replaced by today’s Alfa Romeo 147, which was voted European Car of the Year at its introduction in 2001.
In is in the field of motorsports, however, that the Alfa Romeo has found its place in automobile history, with the 158 Alfetta winning the first Formula One World Championship in 1950 as well as the second one in 1951. The winning streak continues well into the 21st century, with the Alfa Romeo 156 winning both the Italian Super Touring Car and European Touring Car Championships numerous times this decade.
For many people, their first look at an Alfa was an Alfa Romeo Spider driven by Dustin Hoffman in 1967’s hit film, The Graduate. Alfas also featured in three James Bond films, further cementing the car as a status symbol. The Spider continues to be very popular, with a new model expected in 2013.
